The Fengtian Machinery Bureau was established in the 22nd year of the Guangxu reign (AD 1896). In AD 1898, it commenced the minting of a series of machine-struck silver coins in denominations of one yuan, five jiao, two jiao, and one jiao. These coins adopted a yuan-based valuation system, replacing the traditional weight-based liang system. Their design closely resembled that of the coins issued by the Beiyang Machinery Bureau.
This particular specimen is a silver coin minted in AD 1898 at the Fengtian Machinery Bureau in Shenyang. The obverse features a central design of a coiled dragon, encircled by the inscription “Minted in Fengtian Province in the 24th Year of Guangxu.” The reverse displays the denomination “One Jiao” inscribed vertically within a beaded circle, while the outer ring bears an inscription in Manchu script, which translates to “Minted by the Fengtian Machinery Bureau of the Great Qing.” Both sides are framed by an inner toothed rim and an outer border, with a serrated edge.
