This is a 1-peso gold coin issued by Guatemala in AD 1860. The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Rafael Carrera, the first president of Guatemala, who played a pivotal role in the country’s independence. Surrounding the portrait is a Latin inscription, “RAFAEL CARRERA P. DE LA R. DE GUATEMALA,” which translates to “Rafael Carrera, President of the Republic of Guatemala.” Below the neck of the portrait is a smaller inscription, “FRENER,” indicating the renowned Central American engraver Johann-Baptist Frener as the designer.
The reverse of the coin features crossed laurel branches, symbolising victory and honour. Within the laurel leaves, the denomination “1 PESO” and the year of issue “1860” are inscribed. At the bottom outside of the laurel wreath, the coin’s gold content is noted as “21 Q R.” (21-carat gold).
Following the Age of Discovery, Guatemala became a Spanish colony. In AD 1823, the Spanish colonies in Central America declared independence and formed the Federal Republic of Central America. However, the federation eventually dissolved due to conflicts over regional interests. In AD 1847, military leader Rafael Carrera, who held significant local power, declared Guatemala’s secession from the federation and became its first president. During his presidency, he compelled the Congress to recognise him as president for life and worked to restore significant privileges to the Catholic Church.
