This is the 50 francs gold coin minted in AD 1966 in Côte d’Ivoire, commonly referred to as the Ivory Coast. Renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and distinctive design, coins from Côte d’Ivoire are highly sought after by collectors and investors. Adding to their allure is the cultural richness and national identity of the country, encapsulated in its motto: Union, Discipline, Travail (“Unity, Discipline, Labour”). This motto imbues the coin with a sense of historical and cultural significance.
The obverse of the coin features the African elephant, a symbol of profound importance to Ivory Coast.( The elephant, whose ivory tusks inspired the country’s name, also appears on the national coat of arms. This emblem includes a shield bearing the head of an African elephant, crowned with a rising sun, symbolising new beginnings.) The presence of oil palm fronds flanking the elephant highlights the significance of this staple crop to the local population. The inscription République de Côte d’Ivoire (“Republic of Ivory Coast”) on the obverse further solidifies its national identity.
The reverse of the coin portrays Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Ivory Coast’s first president and a prominent political figure. Born on 18 October AD 1905 in the town of Yamoussoukro, Houphouët-Boigny entered politics in the 1940s, founding the African Democratic Rally (RDA). He was elected to the French National Assembly in AD 1946, representing Ivory Coast. Following the country’s independence in AD 1960, he became its first president, a position he held until his death on 7 December AD 1993. While his leadership style and policies remain the subject of debate, his contributions to Ivory Coast’s diplomatic and economic development are widely acknowledged.
