This is a gold commemorative token privately minted in AD 1946 to celebrate the independence of the Republic of the Philippines. The obverse features a profile of a woman, surrounded by the inscriptions “Republica Filipina” and “Julio 4, 1946.” This date marks the formal recognition of the Third Republic of the Philippines by the United States, signifying its official independence. The coin’s edge has a serrated design, while the reverse displays the old Spanish coat of arms encircled by the inscriptions “91% Oro de Las Islas Filipinas” and “2 D,” meaning “91% Gold of the Philippine Islands” “2 Dollars” And”Filipinas”.

Since Spain’s colonisation of the Philippines in AD 1565, the archipelago experienced numerous uprisings against Spanish rule. By AD 1898, the Spanish-American War led to the collapse of Spain’s presence in Asia, allowing Filipinos to declare independence on June 12,AD 1898. However, neither Spain nor the United States recognised this declaration. On December 10, 1898, the Treaty of Paris ceded the Philippines to the United States, which opted for annexation rather than granting independence. This decision precipitated the Philippine-American War in AD 1899, resulting in the dissolution of the First Philippine Republic and the establishment of American colonial rule.

During American governance, the Philippines gradually gained autonomy through various legislative acts. Between AD 1942 and 1945, the Philippines was occupied by Japan, which established a puppet government known as the Second Philippine Republic. After World War II, the United States and the Philippines signed the Treaty of Manila in AD 1946. This treaty formally ended American sovereignty over the Philippines and recognised the independence of the Third Philippine Republic. Thus, the Philippines officially became a fully independent nation, marking the culmination of its long struggle for sovereignty.
