This is a “Paoli” gold coin minted in Rome in AD 1790, with a face value of 30. The coin features a reeded edge, and at the centre of the obverse, there is an intricate floral design, with branches branching out and multiple flowers in bloom. Surrounding the design is a circular inscription in Latin, which reads: “FLORET IN DOMO DOMINI,” meaning “It flourishes under the protection of the Lord.” At the bottom, the year AD 1790 is inscribed, indicating that the coin was minted in that year. The reverse side depicts a seated image of Saint Peter, also surrounded by a circular inscription: “APOSTOLOR PRINCEPS,” meaning “Prince of the Apostles.”

The “Paoli” was a type of gold coin issued by the Papal States, named after Saint Paul. This currency was issued in both silver and gold: the silver version was called “Paolo” and the gold version “Paoli.” The “Paoli” was a special subtype of the “Doppia d’Oro” gold coin. The term “Doppia d’Oro” means “double gold coin,” as its value was double that of the primary currency of the Papal States, the “Scudo” gold coin.

The introduction of the “Doppia d’Oro” gold coin came about due to Spain’s 16th-century AD conquests in the Americas, which brought large quantities of gold to Europe. This influx of gold enabled several European countries to mint new currencies, leading to significant monetary reforms. This trend influenced Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, the Duchy of Milan, the Kingdom of Naples, and other Italian city-states. The minting of “Doppia d’Oro” gold coins continued until the early 19th century AD before gradually ceasing.
