Item number: A1358

Year: AD 1889

Material: Brass

Size: 28.7 x 28.7 mm

This token was minted at the Birmingham Mint, fabricated from brass, and circulated as an internal security access token for the minting facility.

The obverse of the coin features centrally printed text reading “ICKNIELD ST BIRMINGHAM B18 6RX 021·236 7742”, wherein “ICKNIELD ST BIRMINGHAM” denotes the mint’s provincial location and street address, “B18 6RX” represents the postal code for the Hockley district in Birmingham, and “021·236 7742” is the factory’s contact telephone number. The “021” prefix was Birmingham’s early telephone area code, subsequently updated to “0121” in AD 1955. The peripheral text reads “GUARDS C.I.T., INVESTIGATIONS. GENERAL SECURITY SERVICES”, delineating the company’s service portfolio, which encompasses transit, escort, investigative, and general security operations. “C.I.T.” is an abbreviation for “Cash-in-transit”, specifically referring to practical monetary transfers between banks and financial institutions.

The reverse of the coin is inscribed with “MINT SECURITY LIMITED” and “YOU PAY”, signifying that this token is a proprietary instrument of the mint’s security management organisation.

The Birmingham Mint represents the most venerable private minting establishment, founded by the engineer and entrepreneur Ralph Heaton (AD 1755-AD 1832). Spanning from AD 1974 to AD 2003, the mint boasts a heritage exceeding two centuries. During this period, the Birmingham Mint had manufactured currency for governmental authorities in over 100 nations, such as Persia and Germany. In the 19th century AD, it was commissioned by the Guangdong Provincial Government to establish an advanced mint in the province of Guangdong, China. The mint’s original premises were located on Icknield Street in the Hockley district, which has since been transformed into a museum. The facility has relocated to Tyburn Road on Birmingham’s periphery and was acquired by JFT Law Ltd in AD 2003.
