This is a dinar gold coin issued by the 16th Abbasid Caliph, Al-Mu’tadid. The obverse features a central inscription in seven lines of Arabic Kufic script. From top to bottom, it reads: “اللهُوَحْدَهُلَاشَرِيكَلَهُ” (God is One, He has no partner), followed by the caliph’s family name, “بو العبّاس” (The Abbasids), and the title “يَابْنَ اَمِيْرِالْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ” (Son of the Commander of the Faithful). The bottom two lines display titles exclusive to Al-Mu’tadid. Surrounding the central inscription is a circular legend indicating that the coin was minted in the name of Allah in the year AH 274 (AD 887–888) in Raqqa, Syria, accompanied by verses from the Qur’an.
The reverse also features five lines of Kufic script. From top to bottom, it reads: the second half of the shahada, “Muhammadur Rasulullah” (Muhammad is the Messenger of God), followed by the caliph’s name, “المعتضد بالله” (Al-Mu’tadid). Surrounding the central inscription are two circular legends: “هو الذي أرسل رسوله بالهدى ودين الحق ليظهره على الدين كله ولو كره المشركون” (Qur’an 9:33), which translates as: “He it is who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all religions, even though the polytheists may dislike it.”
Al-Mu’tadhid is regarded by later generations as one of the greatest caliphs of the Abbasid Empire, known for his pragmatic and ruthless methods of ruling. In 892, under his leadership, the capital of the Abbasid Empire was moved from Samarra back to Baghdad, where he initiated significant construction projects. Al-Mu’tadhid passed away in AD 902 at the royal palace in Baghdad, with rumours suggesting that he was poisoned.
