This is a gold Ashrafi coin minted during the reign of Timurbugha, a ruler of the Burji dynasty in Egypt, between AD 1467 and AD 1468.
The design of this coin adheres to the typical aesthetic of Burji dynasty gold coins, featuring geometric wave patterns used to segment the inscriptions. The obverse bears the ruler’s title, “السلطان الملك الظاهر” (The Exalted Sultan King), while the reverse displays the familiar Islamic Shahada inscriptions, “لا اله الا الله” (There is no deity but Allah) and “محمد رسول الله” (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah).
The Burji dynasty, part of Egypt’s historical “Mamluk” period, was established by Circassian mercenaries from the Caucasus region. The term “Mamluk” originates from the Abbasid period and refers to Turkic-speaking mercenaries from Central Asia. A hallmark of the Burji dynasty was its short-lived reigns and frequent coups.
Timurbugha, the 17th Sultan, ascended to power amidst political turmoil on December 5, AD 1467. However, his rule lasted less than two months, as he was overthrown in a coup on January 30, AD 1468. Despite his deposition, Timurbugha survived and lived until his death in AD 1475.
