This is an undated silver-gilt aide-mémoire, identified as French in origin based on information provided by the auction house. Both sides of the memorandum feature floral decorations at each of the four corners. The outer frame is adorned with neatly arranged beading, while the central rectangular panel showcases a wavy pattern. Notably, the front centre is further embellished with a mirror motif.
Upon opening the metal case of the aide-mémoire, the interior is lined with indigo velvet and contains paper for recording notes. Accompanying the aide-mémoire is a silver-gilt pencil, intricately engraved with floral and botanical motifs along its barrel, complementing the elegant design of the aide-mémoire itself.
The aide-mémoire, popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, was a small notebook often crafted with ivory or gilded covers. Its compact size made it convenient to store in coat pockets, handbags, or even attached to belts with chains. By the 20th century, with the widespread development and accessibility of the paper industry, these exquisite aide-mémoires gradually fell out of use.
