This is a gold necklace produced in AD 1899 in the United Kingdom, designed in imitation of Chinese style. The necklace consists of eleven ornaments and a chain. Among these, there are six miniature replicas of the “Guangxu Tongbao” coins, one of which is prominently hung around the neckline. On the reverse side of this “Guangxu Tongbao,” the upper portion features the manufacturer’s hallmark, “K.M.R”, with “20 WH” inscribed in the centre. Below this is the production or delivery date, “11TH. NOV. 1899.” Surrounding these inscriptions are four groups of dotted floral motifs used as decorative embellishments.
In addition to the designs modelled after the Guangxu Tongbao coins, the remaining five ornaments feature hollowed-out Chinese characters, each carrying auspicious meanings. These include familiar blessings cherished in Chinese culture, such as “福” (fortune), “祿” (prosperity), “壽” (longevity), and “安寧” (peace), symbolising well-wishes and good fortune.
