This is a gold medal issued in AD 1955, awarded to General George Menno of the Italian Army at the time. The issuing authority was the “General Staff of the Italian Army,” specifically the “Operations Information and Situational Service” (S.I.O.S.), which was responsible for intelligence collection and analysis. The medal has a circular design, with a suspension loop at the top for wear, and is made of gold.
The obverse of the medal features the eagle emblem symbolising the Italian Army. The reverse is surrounded by a beaded border, with the Italian inscription “ESERCITO ITALIANO S.I.O.S. STATO MAGGIORE” encircling it, referring to General George Menno’s service unit, the “Operations Information and Situational Service” of the General Staff of the Italian Army. The central inscription, in flowing script, reads “Generale Giorgio Memmo” and “16-3-1953 / 15-3-1955,” indicating Menno’s rank as General and his service period from March 16, AD 1953, to March 15, AD 1955.
The museum also holds another medal awarded to Colonel George Menno, who received it while serving in the General Staff of the Italian Army.
