This is a gold badge that once belonged to General Giovanni Messe of the Kingdom of Italy. It was awarded to him in AD 1926 during his participation in the historic religious festival, the “S’ Ardia Horse Race Festival,” held in Sardinia.
The badge has a circular shape with a loop at the top for attachment. The obverse side features a central depiction of a knight holding a lance, galloping to the left on a majestic horse. In the background, two riders can be faintly seen riding side by side, with what appears to be smoke or haze from a distant battlefield in the background. At the bottom of the badge, the name of Sardinia’s capital, “CAGLIARI”, is engraved, and in the lower-right corner, the name of the engraver, possibly “E. SARTA”, is inscribed.
The reverse side of the badge features the coat of arms of Sardinia, a circular shield adorned with Saint George’s Cross and four blindfolded Moors. The shield is topped with a crown as a decorative element. On scrolls to the left and right of the shield, the Latin inscription “DECADE PRIMAVERILE IPPICA SARDA MCMXXVI” is displayed, meaning “AD 1926 Sardinian Spring Horse Racing Decade.” In the lower-left corner, there is a hallmark stamped “K18” indicating the gold purity.
Sardinia, located in the Mediterranean Sea, is the second-largest island in Italy, following Sicily, and lies across the sea from the northern island of Corsica. Since AD 1806, the village of Sedilo, situated on the western side of Sardinia, has hosted the grand annual S’Ardia Horse Race every July. This event is said to commemorate a Catholic saint and the victory of Emperor Constantine I at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in AD 312, which, according to tradition, was achieved with divine blessing.
