This is a gold enamel breast pin, its design inspired by the renowned Order of the Black Eagle and the Iron Cross.
The obverse side of the pin prominently features a black Imperial Eagle (Reichsadler) with wings spread and facing left, a symbol of the Prussian royal house. Beneath the eagle is the Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz), signifying the military authority of the Kingdom of Prussia. The spaces between the arms of the cross, which traditionally feature four crowned black eagles in the design of the Order of the Black Eagle, are somewhat abstractly depicted in this pin.
The reverse side of the pin bears no ornamentation and is equipped with a long needle for attachment to clothing.
The Black Eagle Order (Hoher Orden vom Schwarzen Adler) was the highest order of chivalry in the Kingdom of Prussia. It was established on 17 January AD 1701 by Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg, who became King Frederick I of Prussia the following day. Recipients included members of ruling houses, senior civil and military officials, and citizens who rendered significant service to Prussia. Traditionally, the Black Eagle Order featured a Maltese cross in gold with blue enamel, centred with a gold medallion inscribed with the initials “FR,” representing Frederick I. Between the arms of the cross were crowned black eagles.
The Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz), on the other hand, was a German military decoration first established by King Frederick William III of Prussia in AD 1813. Its design was adapted from the black cross on a white background historically used by the Teutonic Order.
