This is a gold coin minted and issued in AD 1882 by the Finnish Mint (Suomen Rahapaja), with a nominal value of 10 Markkaa.
The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Russian Empire, which was the suzerain of Finland, depicted as a double-headed eagle with outstretched wings supporting a shield. Above the eagle’s heads is a crown adorned with flowing ribbons. The eagle’s talons grasp a sceptre and an orb, symbolising royal and ecclesiastical authority, respectively. At the centre of the shield is the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland, which depicts a crowned lion with its right foreleg anthropomorphised into an arm wielding a sword, while trampling on a sabre. Floral embellishments surround the shield. The inscriptions around the edge read “FINLAND*SUOMI,” with “Finland” being the general name and “Suomi” the term in Finnish. At the bottom of an initial “S,” the abbreviation of August Fredrik Soldan, the then director of the Mint.
The reverse of the coin bears the inscription “10 MARKKAA –·– 1882,” denoting its denomination and year of issue. Encircling this inscription is the text “0,322..GRM.KUPARIA * 2,903..GRM.KULTAA,” which translates to “0.322 grams of copper * 2.903 grams of gold,” indicating the coin’s composition as a mixture of metals containing 3.225 grams of 90% pure gold.
After AD 1860, Finland began issuing its own Finnish Markka to replace the unstable Russian Rouble, after the Crimea War. Initially, the Markka was pegged to the Rouble, but in AD 1865 Finland adopted the silver standard, transitioning to the gold standard in AD 1878. The value of the Markka was aligned with the French, Belgian, and Swiss Francs, as well as the Italian Lira. Including the precious metal content on the coin itself may have been intended to enhance user confidence and promote the currency’s independence from Russia Empire. Between AD 1878 and AD 1882, Finland minted approximately 1,481,000 ten-markka gold coins, with 386,000 coins issued in AD 1882 alone.
