This is a token minted in AD 1936, made of nickel, issued for tax payment purposes in the Protectorate of Tonkin, a French colonial territory centred around Hanoi in northern Vietnam.
The token has a hexagonal shape with a circular hole at the top for threading. The obverse side is decorated along the edges with an ivory motif evoking tropical imagery. At the centre, the inscription in French reads “VILLE DE HANOI” (City of Hanoi), with the year of issuance, “1936”, displayed below.
The reverse side of the token features a beaded border encircling the hexagonal edge. At the centre, the engraved token number “1555” is prominently displayed.
In AD 1862, the Nguyễn Dynasty of Vietnam ceded Cochinchina (Nam Kỳ), laying the groundwork for French colonisation in Vietnam. In AD 1887, France consolidated its territories, including Tonkin, Annam, Cochinchina, and Cambodia (later joined by Laos), officially forming the French Indochina Federation. By AD 1902, the French established Hanoi, in northern Vietnam, as the federation’s capital and administrative centre.
In August AD 1945, at the end of World War II, Vietnamese independence leader Hồ Chí Minh seized the opportunity created by the temporary absence of French authority, driven out by the Japanese, to launch an armed uprising in Hanoi. He declared the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Although French forces returned to retake Hanoi, they faced relentless guerrilla warfare from Hồ Chí Minh’s Việt Minh forces. Ultimately, France suffered a decisive defeat at the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ in AD 1954, leading to their withdrawal from Vietnam and the end of nearly a century of colonial rule.
