This is an advertising token that may have been issued by the French Administration of Coins and Medals (Administration des Monnaies et Médailles) between AD 1870 and 1950. The obverse design likely reused motifs from earlier commemorative coins.

The obverse features various tools used in weighing and minting coins, including a balance scale, hammer, mould, file, and a wicker basket filled with coins. Above these elements is the Latin inscription “DANT PONDUS,” meaning “to give weight.” On the original commemorative coin, this inscription was paired with “Dant pretium,” meaning “to give value.” Below is the phrase “AJUSTEURS DE LA MONNOYE DE PARIS 1767,” which translates to “Adjusters of the Paris Mint.” The role of these adjusters was to adjust newly minted coins by trimming them to meet their statutory weight, which explains the depiction of tools such as the balance scale and file. In AD 1767, King Louis XV ordered the relocation of the Paris Mint to its current site at Quai de Conti, commemorating the move with a coin. The obverse of this advertising token likely derives from the design of that commemorative coin, issued around AD 1767, although the original coin’s reverse did not include advertising elements.

The reverse of the token features a central advertisement reading “MAGASIN DE VENTE 10 RUE DU QUATRE-SEPTEMBRE PARIS,” indicating the shop’s location at 10 Rue du Quatre-Septembre in Paris. Rue du Quatre-Septembre was named in AD 1870 to commemorate the establishment of the French Third Republic. Surrounding the advertisement is the phrase “ADMINISTRATION DES MONNAIES ET MÉDAILLES,” identifying the issuing authority as the French Administration of Coins and Medals. The abbreviations on both sides, “N.F.” and “B.R.”, respectively, might indicate the engraver’ mark.

On AD 1 July 1950, the French Administration of Coins and Medals issued an almost identical advertising token. However, the later version referred to the shop as “Nouveau Magasin de vente” (New Sales Store), suggesting that the shop existed prior to this date.
