This is a silver bracelet made with one-cent nickel coins issued by the Dominion of Canada during the years AD 1939 to AD 1945, the period of World War II. The bracelet features a total of seven coins set within a twisted frame.
The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of the reigning Head of the Commonwealth, King George VI of the United Kingdom. Surrounding the portrait is the Latin inscription “GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP:”, which translates to “George VI, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain and Emperor of India.” Below the neck of the portrait is the engraver’s initials “HP,” signifying Thomas Humphrey Paget, the artist responsible for the design.
The reverse of the coin features the maple leaf, a national symbol of Canada. At the top of the design is the denomination “1 CENT” in English, while below is the country name “CANADA.” On the right side of the design is the engraver’s initials “KG,” signifying George Kruger Gray, the artist responsible for the design. On the left side is the year of minting.
As a Dominion of the British Empire, Canada was drawn into the conflict in AD 1939 when Britain declared war on Germany. During World War II, Canada’s geographically safe location, distant from the primary battlefronts, made it a crucial logistical base supporting the Empire. Canada also sent multiple military units to participate in the Allied campaigns in Europe, making outstanding contributions to the victory in the war.
