This is a silver ring crafted from a 3 pence coin issued in AD 1928 during the reign of King George V of the United Kingdom.
The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by the Latin inscription “GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:” (George V, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). The reverse side is decorated with an oak wreath, with the denomination “3” crowned at the centre, and the issuing year “1928” flanking both sides of the denomination.
King George V reigned from AD 1910 to AD 1936 and led the United Kingdom through World War I. During his reign, he also changed the royal family’s German-influenced House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more British-sounding House of Windsor.
On January 20, AD 1936, following the death of King George V, Edward VIII ascended to the British throne. However, the new king, wishing to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, voluntarily abdicated on December 11 of the same year, passing the throne to his brother, George VI. This act became widely known as “the king who gave up the throne for love.”
