This is a 10-shilling coin set issued in AD 2012 by Somaliland, a self-declared sovereign state that is not widely recognised internationally, featuring the theme of the Twelve Zodiac Animals.
The obverse of each coin in this set features the national emblem of Somaliland. At the centre is a set of scales, symbolising equality and a society governed by the rule of law. Below the scales is the Eagle of Saladin, a heraldic symbol commonly found in Islamic nations across the Middle East and North Africa. Beneath the eagle, two hands represent freedom and equality, while the emblem is encircled by olive branches, symbolising peace.
Above the emblem, the Basmala (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) is inscribed in Arabic script, translating to “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
The upper edge of the national emblem bears the issuing authority’s name in Latin script: “BAANKA SOMALILAND” (Bank of Somaliland). The lower edge displays the denomination in English: “SHILIN 10 SHILLINGS.”
The reverse of each coin features an image of one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, arranged in traditional zodiac order: Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Cock, Dog, and Pig. Below each animal, both its simplified Chinese name and English name are inscribed.
Somaliland is in East Africa’s Horn of Africa and is widely regarded by the international community as a part of Somalia.
During the 19th century, as European powers expanded their colonial territories in Africa, the region that is now Somaliland became a British protectorate. In AD 1960, Somaliland declared independence from Britain, but just five days later, it was incorporated into Somalia, which comprised the former Italian colony to the south.
In AD 1991, amid the outbreak of the Somali Civil War, Somaliland unilaterally declared independence. However, it remains unrecognised internationally, with only limited diplomatic interactions—primarily with Ethiopia, its landlocked neighbour, and Taiwan, another entity lacking widespread international recognition.
