This gold coin was minted and issued by Spain in AD 1747 during the reign of King Ferdinand VI, with a denomination of ½ Escudo. Compared to the first issue, this version features a different portrait.

The obverse of the coin depicts a right-facing portrait of Philip V. Encircling the portrait is the inscription “❀FERDINAND ❀ VI ❀ D ❀ G ❀”, an abbreviation of the Latin phrase “Ferdinandus VI Dei Gratia”, meaning “Ferdinand VI, by the Grace of God.” Below the portrait, the year “1747” is inscribed, denoting the year of issue.

The reverse features the small coat of arms of Spain. The second and fourth quadrants of the central shield depict a tower, representing the Kingdom of Castile, while the first and third quadrants display a crowned rampant lion, symbolising the Kingdom of León. Above the shield rests the Spanish royal crown. The Latin inscription “❀HISPANIARUM ❀ REX ❀” translates to “King of the Spains.” Below, the inscription “P ❀ S ❀ J” contains the “S”, which serves as the mintmark for the Seville Mint (Sevilla). On either side of the denomination, the initials “P.J.” represent the assayers Pedro Bernardo and José Antonio Fabra, who certified the coin’s purity and value.

In AD 1747, on the anniversary of Ferdinand VI’s accession, the Kingdom of Spain was embroiled in the War of Austrian Succession. Unlike his father, Philip V, who actively engaged in military conflicts, Ferdinand VI pursued a policy of peace, seeking to avoid further involvement in the war. In AD 1748, he signed the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, bringing the war to an end. Ferdinand VI focused on domestic governance, implementing a series of reforms aimed at revitalising Spain’s finances and naval strength. Although his reign did not restore Spain’s former influence on the European stage, it provided internal stability and gradual development.
