This is a commemorative silver coin issued by the Isle of Man government in AD 1980 for the 22nd Moscow Olympic Games, minted by the Pobjoy Mint, with a face value of one crown.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the George IV State Diadem, facing right. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “ELIZABETH II ISLE OF MAN·1980”, signifying “Elizabeth II, Isle of Man,” issued in the year 1980. The portrait was designed by the British sculptor Arnold Machin, whose work was selected for British coinage in AD 1964. At the time, Machin was already a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts, a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, and a tutor at the Royal Academy of Arts. Between AD 1968 and 1985, his designs were widely adopted for coinage and postage stamps across multiple countries and territories.

Beneath the portrait, the small inscription “PM” denotes the Pobjoy Mint, the company responsible for minting the coin. Established in AD 1965 and headquartered in Surrey, United Kingdom, Pobjoy Mint is one of the largest private mints in Europe and has produced commemorative coins for numerous Commonwealth nations. The company has been widely recognised for its meticulous craftsmanship and refined designs. In AD 2023, Pobjoy Mint announced that it would cease the sale of all legal tender, commemorative coins, investment coins, and postage stamps.

The reverse of the silver coin prominently displays the Triskelion, the symbol of the Isle of Man, at its centre. The Triskelion, consisting of three conjoined legs, has historical associations with the triangular island of Sicily in ancient Greece. The connection between the Isle of Man and this emblem is believed to stem from the Sicilian business of the 13th century, a conflict over the control of Sicily. Although members of the English royal family nominally held the Kingdom of Sicily for a brief period, this event contributed to the adoption of the Triskelion as the emblem of the Isle of Man. Surrounding the Triskelion are depictions of athletes engaging in various Olympic sports, arranged clockwise from the top: javelin throw, football, wrestling, hockey, archery, rowing, diving, sailing, and discus throw. Encircling the outer edge is the inscription “TWENTY SECOND OLYMPICS·MOSCOW.” The 1980 Moscow Olympics were marked by a significant boycott led by the United States in protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the preceding year. A total of 64 nations joined the boycott, leaving only 81 participating countries. While the United Kingdom did send athletes, they competed without officially representing the nation.

At the bottom, the inscription “1 CROWN” denotes the coin’s face value. According to the Isle of Man Treasury, one crown is nominally equivalent to five pounds sterling. Although the coin is considered legal tender, it was issued primarily for numismatic purposes and was not intended for circulation. It can only be exchanged for regular currency through the local government.

The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea, equidistant from England, Scotland, and Ireland. It is a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom but is not part of the United Kingdom itself, instead operating under a self-governing parliamentary system. The island is renowned for its TT motorcycle races, yet it also boasts a wealth of historical sites. Its cultural heritage has been profoundly influenced by Celtic, Viking, and Norman traditions. While the Manx pound is interchangeable with the British pound at par, it is not accepted for transactions within mainland Britain. In addition to periodically updating its currency designs, the Isle of Man frequently issues commemorative coins, often featuring distinctive local themes, making them highly sought after by collectors.
