This is a 1 kopek copper coin from the year AD 1776, issued during the reign of Catherine II. It was restricted in circulation and distribution by the administrative unit responsible for Siberian affairs, known as the Siberian Province.
The obverse of the coin features the royal monogram “ЕII,” exclusively associated with Catherine II, adorned with a crown at the top. Below, on both the left and right sides, are abbreviations indicating the copper’s origin from the Kolyvan Copper Smelting Plant (Колыванская медь). Surrounding the monogram is a wreath composed of intertwined laurel and pine branches.
The reverse of the coin features the emblem of the Siberian Province, depicting two symmetrically positioned sables supporting an oval frame. Inside the frame, the denomination “ДЕНГА.” (Kopek) and the year of issue, “1776,” are inscribed in Russian. Surrounding the emblem is a circular legend reading “СИБИРСКАЯ ∙ МОНЕТА ∙,” which translates to Siberian Coin. The coin’s edge is distinctively slanted.
Siberia refers to the vast Asian territory of Russia extending east of the Ural Mountains. The systematic conquest of Siberia by Russia began under Ivan IV, who sought to overthrow the Siberian Khanate, a Mongol successor state established in the region. By the 17th century, Cossacks, backed by the Russian Tsars, accelerated the conquest of Siberia in pursuit of highly valuable furs, particularly sable. By the reign of Catherine II, the Russian Empire had established full control over the vast Siberian territory, stretching from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east.
