This is a 50-cent aluminum coin issued in AD 1953 by the Kingdom of Cambodia during the reign of Norodom Sihanouk.
The obverse of the coin features the national emblem of the Kingdom of Cambodia, used between AD 1953 and AD 1970. The emblem consists of a ceremonial mantle, topped by a radiant crown. Below the crown, the design is adorned with the sacred Om symbol, a sword, and a treasure urn. Surrounding the emblem, rice stalks extend on both sides. The outer inscription in Khmer script reads “សហព័ន្ធរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា” (Kingdom of Cambodia).
The reverse of the coin features a wreath, within which the denomination is inscribed in both Khmer and French as “៥០ សេន / 50 CENT” (50 cents). The outer edge of the wreath, near the lower section, is marked by the mint mark of the Paris Mint, serving as a separator. The bottom of the design displays the issuance year, “1953”, while the upper edge bears the French inscription “ROYAUME DU CAMBODGE” (Kingdom of Cambodia).
In AD 1953, France ended its colonial rule over Cambodia, and Norodom Sihanouk became the first king of the independent Kingdom of Cambodia. In AD 1955, he chose to abdicate the throne and continued to participate in the country’s political affairs as prime minister. In AD 1975, during the period when the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, took control of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk was placed under house arrest and subsequently fled to Beijing, China. He would not return to Cambodia until AD 1993, when he regained the title of king.
