This is a 1 Lek aluminium coin issued in AD 1964 by the People’s Republic of Albania, under the governance of the Albanian Party of Labour, within the context of the Cold War and the broader international geopolitical framework of the communist bloc.

The obverse of the coin features the national emblem of Albania at the time, with a black double-headed eagle surrounded by wheat stalks on either side. The double-headed eagle symbolises the national hero of Albania, Skanderbeg, who led resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Above the eagle is a red star, representing communism. The ribbon on the wheat stalks bears the date “24 MAJ 1944” (May 24, AD 1944), which marks the anniversary of the declaration of the provisional government by the Albanian Communist Party at a meeting in Përmet during the final stages of World War II. Surrounding the emblem are four five-pointed stars on each side, with the year of issue, “1964,” inscribed at the lower edge, and the national name “SHQIPËRI” (Albania) written in Albanian at the upper edge.

The reverse of the coin features a pair of intertwined wheat stalks, with five five-pointed stars at the upper edge. In the centre is the denomination “1 LEK,” with the lek being the currency still in circulation in Albania today.

Albania is located on the Balkan Peninsula. After the end of World War II, the People’s Republic of Albania was officially declared in AD 1946, becoming a member of the Eastern Bloc led by the Soviet Union. From AD 1946 to AD 1985, Albania was under the long-term leadership of Enver Hoxha, the General Secretary of the Party of Labour. Hoxha promoted a cult of personality within the country, while also navigating shifting alliances with Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and China. He went on to establish the “Hoxhaism” theory, a unique Marxist-Leninist ideology named after himself, which guided the country’s communist party policies.
