This is a 1 cent copper coin issued in AH 1304 (AD 1887) during the reign of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam, the last Sultan of the Sultanate of Brunei.
The obverse of the coin features a five-pointed star at the centre within a circle, surrounded by Jawi script that denotes the Islamic year “١٣٠۴” (1304) the denomination “ساتو شين” (1 cent), and the issuing authority “بلنجه فرينته بروني” (Brunei Treasury Department), which was commonly used in the Malay Archipelago.
The reverse of the coin shows significant wear, particularly in the centre where the numeral “1” denoting the denomination has completely worn away. The upper edge of the reverse is inscribed with the English name “SULTANATE OF BRUNEI,” while the lower edge features the Islamic year “1304.”
The Sultanate of Brunei was established in the mid-14th century and, at its peak, controlled the entire island of Borneo and the southern Philippine Island of Palawan. By the late 17th century, internal conflicts within the royal family and the increasing presence of emerging European powers in the Malay Archipelago led to a gradual decline in the kingdom’s territorial holdings. In AD 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate, a status it maintained until regaining full independence in AD 1984.
