This is a 5-cent cupronickel coin that circulated jointly in Malaysia and British Borneo in the year AD 1961. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing bust of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the reigning British monarch at the time. Surrounding the central portrait is a circular inscription in English that reads “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND.”
The reverse of the coin features the denomination “5 CENTS” at the centre, encircled by a beaded border. The outer ring bears an inscription indicating the circulation region, “MALAYA AND BRITISH BORNEO,” along with the year of issue, “1961,” which is flanked on both sides by decorative rose motifs.
The Malaya and British Borneo dollar was a common currency that circulated in British colonial territories, including the Malay Peninsula and North Borneo, from AD 1953 to AD 1967. Even after the British colony on the Malay Peninsula gained independence as Malaysia in AD 1957, this currency remained in use. In AD 1967, following their respective independence, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei each introduced their own national currencies. However, the Malaya and British Borneo dollar continued to be recognised as legal tender until AD 1969.
