This is a 2½-guilder silver coin issued by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in AD 1929.
The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Queen Wilhelmina, the reigning monarch of the Netherlands at the time. Below the portrait is a decorative five-petalled flower. The design is encircled by a beaded border, along with the Latin-inscribed title “WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN” (Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands).
The reverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, consisting of a crowned shield adorned with a rampant lion. On either side of the shield, the denomination is marked as “2½ G” (2½ Dutch guilders). Below the shield, a seahorse and a sceptre motif represent the mintmaster Copius Hoitsema and the hallmark of the Royal Dutch Mint, respectively. The issuance year, “1929,” is inscribed at the bottom. Surrounding the design is the inscription “MUNT VAN HET KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN,” meaning “Currency of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.”
The edge of the coin is inscribed with “★ GOD ★ ZIJ ★ MET ★ ONS”, a phrase meaning “God be with us.” This motto originates from the Eighty Years’ War, during which it served as a rallying cry for Dutch independence. To this day, the same inscription continues to appear on the edge of the 2-euro coins issued by the Netherlands.
Queen Wilhelmina was the longest-reigning monarch in Dutch history, ruling for 57 years from AD 1890 to AD 1948. During her reign, she witnessed the dramatic transformations of the Netherlands and Europe in the 20th century.
During World War I, under her leadership, the Netherlands maintained its neutrality and avoided direct involvement in the conflict. However, in AD 1940, during World War II, Nazi Germany violated Dutch neutrality and invaded the country. Forced into exile, Queen Wilhelmina relocated with her family to the United Kingdom, where she established a government-in-exile. She regularly addressed the Dutch people through radio broadcasts, offering them hope and resistance against Nazi occupation. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously praised her as “the only real man in the Dutch government.”
