This is a 1 Peso silver coin issued in AD 1870 by Guatemala, located in Central America. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Rafael Carrera, the first president who laid the foundation for Guatemala’s independence. Below the neck of the portrait is the engraver’s mark, “FRENER F.”, referring to Johann-Baptist Freiner, a renowned Central American sculptor. Surrounding the coin’s edge is the Latin inscription “RAFAEL CARRERA P. DE LA R. DE GUATEMALA,” which translates to “Rafael Carrera, President of the Republic of Guatemala.”

The reverse of the coin features the Guatemalan coat of arms used from AD 1858 to AD 1871, which includes a shield containing three volcanoes with a rising sun above them. The shield is surrounded by a national flag and a laurel wreath, with a ribbon inscribed with the Latin phrase “GUATIMALA PROTECTIOME RESPUBLICA SUB D.O.M,” which translates to “Guatemala, a Republic under the Protection of the Most Holy God.” The lower edge of the coat of arms bears the inscriptions indicating the silver content “L.0900” (0.900 pure silver), the denomination “UN PESO” (1 Peso), and the year of issue “1870 R.”

Following the Age of Discovery, Guatemala became a Spanish colony. In AD 1823, the Spanish colonies in Central America declared independence and formed the Federal Republic of Central America. However, the federation eventually dissolved due to conflicts over regional interests. In AD 1847, military leader Rafael Carrera, who held significant local power, declared Guatemala’s secession from the federation and became its first president. During his presidency, he compelled the Congress to recognise him as president for life and worked to restore significant privileges to the Catholic Church.
