This is a silver coin issued during the reign of Emperor Hadrian of the Roman Empire, dated between AD 117 and AD 138. Due to its considerable age, the coin’s surface has suffered significant wear, rendering many details indistinct.
The obverse of this coin features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Hadrian, with faintly visible details of his curled hair and beard. The reverse side is even more heavily worn, but a left-facing figure can still be discerned, likely representing the Roman deity Jupiter wearing a laurel crown.
Hadrian was the third of the Five Good Emperors of the Roman Empire. His most renowned achievement was the construction of Hadrian’s Wall, which established the northern boundary of Roman Britain. In addition to his military and administrative policies, Hadrian travelled extensively across the empire’s provinces and sought to make Athens the centre of his efforts to promote Greek culture.
