The Satyalancana Dwidya Sistha (Military Education Loyalty Medal) is a loyalty medal established in AD 2009, conferred upon military personnel of the Indonesian National Armed Forces as well as Indonesian citizens who are not members of the armed forces, in recognition of their contributions to the education and development of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. Specifically, any individual who has served as a teacher or instructor at an educational institution associated with the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and who has demonstrated loyalty, exemplary work performance and good conduct for at least two consecutive years, or for three non-consecutive years, or for three consecutive service periods, or for a cumulative total of four non-consecutive service periods, is eligible for this medal. In addition, foreign nationals who have served as teachers or instructors within the Indonesian National Armed Forces system, and who are recognised for their meritorious contributions to the education, development and training of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, are similarly eligible; likewise, military personnel employed in various educational institutions, units or departments responsible for educational functions within the Indonesian National Armed Forces fall within the scope of eligibility.
The medal is cast in an antique bronze finish. At its centre are an open book and a burning candle, while a sabre and a rifle are crossed over the book. A ribbon encircles the upper portion, bearing the Indonesian inscription “DWIDYA SISTHA”, which denotes education and instruction. The edge is slightly raised and takes the form of a seven-pointed star, with concave curves between each point. The reverse is plain and unadorned, featuring, slightly above the centre, the inscription “REPUBLIK INDONESIA”, signifying the Republic of Indonesia. The ribbon is of a yellow base with green patterns; specifically, the yellow ribbon displays two vertical green stripes positioned along its lateral edges, which do not extend to the bottom, thereby leaving a narrow yellow slit along the edges. The bail attached to the ribbon is fashioned in the shape of a tuft of cotton.
The Satyalancana (Loyalty Medal) is an emblem of honour in Indonesia, ranking below the Tanda Kehormatan Bintang (Star of Honour) and the Tanda Jasa Medali (Service Medal), with awards granted for both military and civil merits, either on the basis of length of service or specific acts. Its etymology is derived from Sanskrit, with “satya” (सत्य) meaning “truth” or “loyalty”, and “alankara” (अलंकार) signifying “decoration” or “embellishment”.
