This is an order of the “Nishan-e-Pakistan,” the highest civil award of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The award is divided into four classes, and this piece belongs to the third class.
The order is housed in a light green leather presentation case. The lid of the case features a metal nameplate engraved with the abbreviation “SPK,” indicating that this order was officially commissioned by the Government of Pakistan and manufactured by Spink, a historic British auction house and medal manufacturer.
The order is crafted from 14 kt gold and consists of ten golden rays emanating from a central enamelled medallion. The obverse medallion features a gold-bordered dark green background, symbolising Pakistan’s Islamic faith and national flag colours. At its centre is the emblem of Pakistan, which is a circular shield divided into four quadrants: the upper left contains a cotton flower, the upper right depicts a tea stalk, the lower right features four jute stalks, and the lower left showcases a sheaf of wheat.
The reverse of the order features a gold disc decorated with green enamel, devoid of any additional text or ornamental designs.
The top of the order is connected to the ribbon by a five-pointed star-shaped suspension. The ribbon mimics the design of the Pakistan flag, featuring a green-bordered white background with two delicate green stripes running through the centre as decoration.
The Order of Pakistan was established in AD 1957 and is awarded to citizens or foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to the country. Each year, on Pakistan’s Independence Day, August 14, the government announces the list of recipients. The order is formally presented by the President during the following year’s Pakistan Day celebrations.
