This is a 2½-Gulden silver coin issued by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in AD 1872.

The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Willem III, the reigning ruler of the Netherlands at the time. Below the portrait, the engraver’s signature, “I.P. SCHOUBERG. F.” (Johannes Petrus Schouberg Fecit), is inscribed. Surrounding the portrait is a Latin inscription of Willem III’s title: “WILLEM III KONING DER NED.G.H.V.L.” (Willem III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg).

The reverse of the coin features the national coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with a crowned shield adorned with a lion. On either side of the shield, the denomination “2½ G” (2½ Dutch Gulden) is inscribed. Beneath the shield, on either side, are totems of a long sword and a sceptre, which represent the mint master Herman Adriann van den Wall Bake and the Royal Dutch Mint’s marks. Surrounding the coin is the inscription “MUNT VAN HET KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN,” meaning “Currency of the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” along with the year of issuance “1872” at the top.

The edge of the coin is inscribed with “★ GOD ★ ZIJ ★ MET ★ ONS”, a phrase meaning “God be with us.” This motto originates from the Eighty Years’ War, during which it served as a rallying cry for Dutch independence. To this day, the same inscription continues to appear on the edge of the 2-euro coins issued by the Netherlands.

Willem III served as King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from AD 1849 until his death in AD 1890. Following the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars in AD 1815, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, under the terms of the Treaty of Vienna, also assumed the title of Grand Duke of Luxembourg. However, after Willem III’s death in AD 1890, Luxembourg, adhering to the Salic Law, which only permitted male rulers, rejected the succession of his daughter, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, to the position of Grand Duchess. Instead, Luxembourg appointed the Duke of Nassau, a member of the Holy Roman Empire, as the new Grand Duke. This marked the separation of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, establishing Luxembourg as an independent nation.

SCHOUBERG.
