This is a Tilla gold coin minted in the Kingdom of Afghanistan in the year SH 1313 (AD 1934), located in the inland region of Asia.
The obverse of the coin features two beaded circles. Within the central concentric circle, there is an inscription in Persian script, which includes the phrase “المتوكل على الله” (“Trusting in God”) and the ruler’s name, “محمد ظاهر شاه” (“Mohammed Zahir Shah”). The outer beaded circle is decorated with tied wheat stalks at the bottom edge, while the top edge bears the inscription of the country’s name in Persian script, “افغانستان” (“Afghanistan”).
The reverse of the coin features the national emblem of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. At the centre is the silhouette of a mosque, symbolising Islamic faith. Inside the mosque is a mihrab (a prayer niche) facing Mecca. On either side of the mosque, pillars hold flags.
Below the mosque, the Persian year “۱۳۱۳” (1313) is inscribed. Surrounding it, tied wheat stalks serve as decorative elements, with a ribbon displaying the country’s name in Persian script, “افغانستان” (“Afghanistan”). The upper edge of the coin is inscribed in Persian with “طلای افغانی” (Afghani Tilla), with “Tilla” being the term used in Central Asia and Afghanistan for the denomination of gold coins.
The “Gram” (کرام) was a historical unit used for gold coinage in the Kingdom of Afghanistan.
The Kingdom of Afghanistan was established in AD 1929 by Mohammed Nadir Shah, a British-backed exiled military officer who returned from India to end the civil war and restore stability. In AD 1933, Nadir Shah was assassinated, and his 19-year-old son, Mohammed Zahir Shah, ascended the throne.
During his reign, Zahir Shah spearheaded modernisation efforts, making his era one of Afghanistan’s most democratic and prosperous periods. However, these reforms also provoked resistance from religiously conservative tribal leaders, while his pro-Western foreign policy led to dissatisfaction among pro-Soviet factions within the Afghan military.
In AD 1973, while Zahir Shah was on an official visit to Italy, his cousin Mohammed Daoud Khan staged a coup, abolished the monarchy, and declared Afghanistan a republic, assuming the presidency. Following the coup, Zahir Shah remained in exile in Italy, refraining from any involvement in Afghan affairs.
It was not until AD 2002 that he returned to Afghanistan, where he was honoured with the title of “Father of the Nation.” He passed away in AD 2007 at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness.
