This is a “Guangxu Yuanbao” silver coin minted in the 32nd year of Guangxu (AD 1906), during the Bing Wu year, by the Jilin Arsenal, with a denomination of 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens. Due to the passage of time, many details on the coin have worn away and are no longer visible.
The obverse features a five-clawed coiled dragon breathing fire, flanked by the formal name of the country, “Da Qing Guo” (Great Qing State), in Manchu script. The “KIRIN. PROVINCE” is inscribed in English at the top edge, divided by the Manchu script, while the simplified denomination “1 MACE AND 44 CANDAREENS” is inscribed in English at the bottom edge. On each side, there is a six-petal flower as decoration.
The reverse features a beaded circle enclosing the characters “Guangxu Yuanbao” surrounded by a potted evergreen flower vase. The year of the zodiac, “Bing Wu”, is inscribed on the sides of the beaded circle. “Made in Jilin Province” is inscribed at the top edge, and the full denomination “Kuping 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens” is at the bottom edge.
Milling method in Jilin began with the establishment of the “Jilin Arsenal” in the 10th year of Guangxu (AD 1884). By the 22nd year of Guangxu (AD 1896), the Jilin Arsenal started minting the Guangxu Yuanbao. It was not until the 25th year of Guangxu (AD 1899) that the Guangxu Yuanbao minted in Jilin began to include the zodiac year on the reverse side.
