This is a Mahmudi silver coin, issued after AD 1572 when Emperor Akbar of the Mughal Empire conquered Maharashtra. Following their submission to Mughal rule, the Rajah of Baglana continued to issue coinage in the traditional Mahmudi denomination. The Mahmudi was a widely circulated silver currency used across the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and parts of India.
The obverse of the coin bears Emperor Akbar’s titles and name inscribed in Persian, accompanied by a seven-petalled floral motif characteristic of the Mulher mint. The reverse features the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, serving as both an inscription and an ornamental element.
During the reign of Akbar, from AD 1556 to AD 1605, as the third emperor, he led the Mughal Empire to its zenith. Not only did Akbar expand the empire’s territories externally, but he also implemented policies of religious tolerance domestically. He elevated the status of indigenous Hindus and encouraged the development of culture and education, earning him the title of the greatest emperor of the Mughal Empire.
