This is an Antoninianus silver coin issued between AD 249 and AD 251 in the Roman province of Dacia under the reign of Emperor Decius. The Antoninianus had a face value equivalent to double Denarius and was composed of silver.
The obverse side of the coin exhibits noticeable striking marks, with a central right-facing portrait of Emperor Decius. He is depicted wearing a cuirass, with a tied ribbon and a radiate crown on his head. Surrounding the portrait is a beaded border and a circular Latin inscription, which reads “IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG,” representing the emperor’s full title and name: Imperator Caesar Messius Quintus Traianus Decius Augustus.
The reverse side of the coin also features a beaded border, with a central personification of the province of Dacia. The figure is depicted as a male wearing a laurel wreath and a cloak, holding a sceptre in his hand while facing left. Surrounding the image is the Latin inscription “DACIA,” identifying the province.
Dacia was a Roman province established between AD 106 and AD 275 after Emperor Trajan conquered the Kingdom of Dacia, located in present-day Romania. In AD 249, Decius, then a general, was sent by Emperor Philip the Arab to suppress a rebellion in the Moesia region. Following his victory, Decius gained the support of his troops, marched back to Rome, and overthrew Philip, becoming the new emperor.
In AD 251, Moesia faced another Gothic invasion, prompting Emperor Decius to lead his army to the front lines alongside his son. However, during the Battle of Abritus, Decius fell into an ambush and perished in a marsh, becoming the first Roman emperor to be killed in battle by a foreign enemy.
