This is a copper coin minted in the 3rd year of the Xuantong reign (AD 1911) by the Tianjin Central Mint, intended as part of a new nationwide series of copper currency. The series comprised five denominations: 1 Cash, 2 Cash, 5 Cash, 10 Cash, and 20 Cash. However, due to the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution in October of that year and the forced abdication of Emperor Puyi the following year, only the 1 Cash and 10 Cash denominations saw widespread circulation in the market.
The obverse side of the coin features a central beaded circle, within which a five-clawed flying dragon is depicted with its body coiled and its head facing left, mouth open. Surrounding the dragon, cloud motifs serve as decorative elements. Outside the beaded circle, the inscription “大清銅幣” (Great Qing Copper Coin) is engraved in Chinese characters, following a top-bottom-right-left sequence.
The reverse side of the coin features a concentric circular design. At the centre, the denomination “十文” (Ten Cash) is prominently displayed, flanked on both sides by decorative motifs of tied rice stalks. Positioned slightly above, on the left and right sides, are six-petalled floral ornaments serving as separators. The upper edge bears the inscription “宣統三年” (Xuantong Year 3), indicating the year of issuance. The lower edge displays the exchange rate, stating that one hundred of these coins were equivalent to one silver yuan of the Great Qing currency system.
