This is a 100-sol silver coin issued by Peru in AD 1973 to commemorate the centennial of diplomatic relations with Japan.
The obverse of the coin features a solid circular border with the national coat of arms of Peru at its centre. The shield is divided into three sections: the upper left depicts a vicuña, native to the Andes Mountains; the upper right features the cinchona tree, also native to the Andes, from which quinine, a treatment for malaria, is extracted; and the lower half displays the Cornucopia, symbolising abundance. At the top of the shield, a civic crown of holly oak adorns the design, while laurel and olive branches flank the sides. Below the coat of arms, the years “1873-1973” are inscribed, representing the centennial of diplomatic relations between Peru and Japan and the year of the coin’s issuance.
Outside the solid circular border, an annular Spanish inscription reads: “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU 8 DICIMOS FINO 1973”, indicating the issuing authority, the silver content of the coin, and the year of issuance. This translates to “Central Reserve Bank of Peru, .800 fine silver, 1973.”
The reverse of the coin also features a solid circular border, with the denomination “100 soles de oro” (100 Soles) inscribed at the centre. To the right of the denomination, a chrysanthemum and a cantuta flower are depicted, symbolising the national flowers of Japan and Peru, respectively. Below, a small “M” mintmark represents the Lima Mint, which was responsible for producing the coin. Surrounding the outer edge, an annular inscription reads “COMMEMORACION DEL INTERCAMBIO COMERCIAL PERUANO-JAPONES”, meaning “Commemoration of Peru-Japan Trade Exchange.”
In AD 1873, during the Meiji Restoration, Japan formally established diplomatic relations with Peru, making Peru the first South American country to do so. Following this, Japanese immigrants gradually arrived in Peru, engaging in agriculture and railway construction. By the eve of World War II, the Japanese immigrant population in Peru had grown to over 20,000. However, after the attack on Pearl Harbour, Japanese immigrants in Peru faced xenophobic discrimination, and some were forcibly relocated to Japanese internment camps in the United States. Diplomatic relations between Peru and Japan were only restored in AD 1959. In AD 1990, Alberto Fujimori, a second-generation Japanese-Peruvian, was elected as Peru’s president, becoming the third Asian-descended leader of a South American country.
