This is a “Pitis” coin minted from tin during the reign of the 32nd Sultan of the Aceh Sultanate, Alauddin Sulaiman Ali Iskandar Syah (AD 1838–1857). The Aceh Sultanate was an Islamic state established in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. In Malay, the term “Pitis” signifies “light” or “thin.”
Due to its age, the coin exhibits significant surface wear; however, the beaded circles surrounding both sides remain discernible. The obverse side features four lines of Jawi script reading “بندر اچه دار السلام”, which translates to “Port of Aceh, Abode of Peace.” The reverse side displays a diamond-shaped arrangement of four small circular dots at the top, followed by three lines of Jawi script reading “مصروف”, meaning “Currency for exchange.” Below the inscription, a Hijri calendar date was originally present, but due to extensive wear, it is no longer legible.
In the 16th century, the Aceh Sultanate was established in northern Sumatra. By recognising the Ottoman Empire as its suzerain, the sultanate secured Ottoman naval assistance, enabling it not only to successfully repel Portuguese invasions following the Age of Exploration but also to expand its territorial domain. However, by the mid-19th century, during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Ali Iskandar Syah, the young ruler faced increasing Dutch encroachment from their stronghold in Batavia on Java, while simultaneously contending with a civil war instigated by his uncle. These conflicts contributed to Aceh’s gradual decline. In AD 1873, the Netherlands launched another war against Aceh, ultimately consolidating control over the region by AD 1904.
As the last region of the Indonesian archipelago to succumb to Dutch rule, Aceh continued to resist the Indonesian government in Jakarta even after the Netherlands withdrew in AD 1949. Armed conflict persisted for decades until a peace agreement was reached in AD 2005, granting Aceh the status of a highly autonomous administrative region.
