This is a Mahmudi silver coin minted during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, dated Hijri 1006–1007 (AD 1597–1598). The Mahmudi was a widely circulated silver currency used across the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and parts of India.
The obverse of the coin features Persian inscriptions with Emperor Akbar’s titles and name, along with a mintmark in the shape of a parasol. Additionally, there are rows of neatly arranged beaded dots along the right and lower edges.
The reverse of the coin bears the Shahada (Islamic creed), a phrase well known to Muslims, with another row of neatly arranged beaded dots adorning the bottom edge.
During the reign of Akbar, from AD 1556 to AD 1605, as the third emperor, he led the Mughal Empire to its zenith. Not only did Akbar expand the empire’s territories externally, but he also implemented policies of religious tolerance domestically. He elevated the status of indigenous Hindus and encouraged the development of culture and education, earning him the title of the greatest emperor of the Mughal Empire.
