This is a Thieu Tri Tongbao coin, minted between AD 1841 and AD 1847, during the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri, the third ruler of the Nguyễn Dynasty, using his regnal title.
The coin features a square-holed design, heavily influenced by neighbouring China’s coinage style. On the obverse, the four Chinese characters Thieu Tri Tongbao (紹治通寶) are inscribed in the order of top, bottom, right, and left. The reverse side is blank, with no inscriptions or designs.
During the reign of Emperor Thiệu Trị, Vietnam and Siam (Thailand) engaged in multiple military conflicts over suzerainty over Cambodia, ultimately resolving the dispute by making Cambodia a shared vassal state of both countries. Additionally, in Vietnam’s relations with France, tensions arose over the issue of Catholic missionary activities. This led to military confrontations between the two nations, prompting Emperor Thiệu Trị to reaffirm his ban on Catholicism and intensify the suppression of Catholic followers.
