This is a commemorative gold coin with a denomination of ½ pound, issued in AH 1377 (AD 1958) under the leadership of Nasser in Egypt. It was minted to celebrate the formation of the United Arab Republic with Syria and features elements inspired by ancient Egyptian motifs.

The obverse of the coin features a depiction of Ramesses II, one of the most renowned pharaohs of ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom period. He is shown facing right, riding a chariot and drawing a fully extended bow.

The upper rim of the reverse side bears a circular Arabic inscription reading “تذكار قيام الجمهورية العربية المتحدة” (“Commemoration of the Establishment of the United Arab Republic”). At the centre, the denomination “نصف جنيه” (½ pound) is inscribed in two lines. The lower part of the reverse displays the Gregorian year “١٩٥٨” (1958) alongside the corresponding Hijri year “١٣٧٧” (1377). The lower edge of the coin is adorned with a regal motif composed of vulture wings, a cobra, and the solar disk symbolising the god Amun, forming a stylised royal crown.

In AD 1952, following a military coup, Gamal Abdel Nasser seized power in Egypt and began actively promoting Pan-Arabism throughout North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. He advocated for the unification of Arab states to collectively resist Israel and the dominance of Western powers. However, his vision faced opposition from Arab monarchies, notably Saudi Arabia, which viewed such unification efforts with suspicion.

Despite this resistance, Nasser’s Pan-Arabist ideology resonated with Syria, and on February 1, AD 1958, Egypt and Syria officially merged to form the United Arab Republic (UAR). Nonetheless, tensions soon arose within the union. Syrian leaders grew increasingly dissatisfied with the centralised authority in Cairo and Egypt’s dominant role in governance. As a result, in AD 1961, Syria withdrew from the union. Egypt, however, retained the name “United Arab Republic” until AD 1971, when it was officially changed to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
