This is a 100 Qirsh gold coin issued in AD 1852 by the Eyalet of Egypt under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
The obverse of the coin features the personal tughra of Sultan Abdülmecid I of the Ottoman Empire. To the right of the tughra is a decorative motif of rose branches, while the denomination “١٠٠ ش” (100 Qirsh) is inscribed along the lower edge.
The upper edge of the reverse side bears the numeral “١٥” (15), indicating that this coin was struck in the fifteenth year of the reign, corresponding to AD 1852. At the centre is the Arabic inscription “ضرب في مصر,” meaning “Struck in Egypt.” Along the lower edge is the Hijri year “١٢٥٥” (1255), marking the initial year of issue for this type of gold coin, which corresponds to AD 1839.
Egypt was one of the wealthiest provinces under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. However, beginning in AD 1805, the Albanian-born military strongman Muhammad Ali Pasha seized de facto control of Egypt, eventually engaging in multiple conflicts with the Ottoman central authority. These confrontations culminated in the Empire’s formal recognition of his family’s hereditary rule over Egypt. At the time this coin was issued in AD 1852, Egypt was effectively governed by Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Abbas I, though nominal allegiance was still paid to the reigning Ottoman sultan, Abdülmecid I.
