This is a commemorative gold coin with a denomination of 5 pesos, issued in AD 1930 by the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, located on the eastern bank of the La Plata River in South America.
The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of José Gervasio Artigas, the national hero of Uruguay. Artigas was born in Montevideo, then under Spanish colonial rule, which is now the capital of Uruguay. Beginning in AD 1811, Artigas participated in wars against invasions by Spain, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and Portugal, ultimately facing defeat and retreating to live in exile in Asunción, the capital of neighbouring Paraguay, until his death. To the left of the portrait, near the neck, is the signature mark “L. BAZOR,” belonging to Lucien Georges Bazor, the chief engraver of the Paris Mint. The outer rim of the portrait bears the Latin inscription “REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY” (Oriental Republic of Uruguay), while the lower edge features the name of the national hero, “★ ARTIGAS ★” (Artigas).
The reverse of the coin depicts an olive branch set against the backdrop of the La Plata River, with a rising sun emerging from the horizon in the distance. At the center, the denomination “5 PESOS” (5 pesos) and the year of issue “1930” are inscribed in Latin script. The inscription along the upper rim, “★ CENTENARIO DE 1830 ★,” translates to “Centenary of 1830,” signifying that the coin was issued to commemorate the centennial of the adoption of the AD 1830 Constitution.
The edge of the coin is inscribed with the Latin motto “CON LIBERTAD NI OFENDO NI TEMO ★ ★ ★,” which translates to “With liberty, I neither offend nor fear.”
