This is a 1 penny copper coin produced in AD 1876 by the Birmingham Mint under commission from the British government.
The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria, wearing a laurel wreath and her hair styled in a chignon. Surrounding the effigy is the Latin inscription “VICTORIA D:G: BRITT:REG:F:D: ,” which translates to “Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of Britain, Defender of the Faith.”
The reverse of the coin depicts Britannia, the personification of Britain, seated upon a rock. In her left-hand she holds a trident, while her right-hand rests upon a round shield adorned with the Union Jack. In the background, to the left, a lighthouse is visible, and to the right, a three-masted sailing ship. Encircling the image is the denomination “ONE PENNY,” with the year of issue “1876” inscribed at the bottom. Beneath the date appears the mint mark “H,” indicating production at the Birmingham Mint. In contrast, coins struck by the Royal Mint in London are distinguished by a blank space beneath the date, with no mint mark present.
