This is a silver coin with a nominal value of 1 Rial, issued in AH 1382 (AD 1963) by the Yemen Arab Republic, commonly referred to as “North Yemen.”

The obverse of the coin features a central branch adorned with fruits and leaves, encircled by a geometric floral pattern. The base of the design bears the issuance year in the Islamic calendar, “١٣٨۲” (AH 1382), and the Gregorian calendar, “۱۹٦٣” (AD 1963). The reverse displays a solid circle at its centre, inscribed in Arabic with the denomination “ريال واحد” (1 rial). Surrounding the circle, the upper rim is engraved with the country’s name in Arabic, “الجمهورية العربية اليمنية” (Yemen Arab Republic), while the lower rim is ornamented with symmetrical floral motifs.

North Yemen was a state that existed from AD 1962 to 1990. In AD 1962, influenced by Egypt’s Nasser, the North Yemeni military overthrew the Mutawakkilite Kingdom, proclaiming the establishment of the Yemen Arab Republic. The nascent republican regime received support from Egypt, while the royalist forces were backed by Saudi Arabia, leading to a civil war that persisted until a ceasefire in AD 1970.

In AD 1990, North Yemen unified with the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), formerly a British colony, to form the Republic of Yemen. However, post-unification tensions over resource allocation and religious sectarianism triggered recurrent civil conflicts, most notably the Yemeni Civil War since AD 2014, with factional divisions largely reflecting the historical North-South Yemen boundary.
