This is a transit token with a face value of one fare, issued between AD 1947 and AD 1949 in Beaumont, Texas, United States. Struck in cupronickel, the token’s surface has acquired a green patina over time. The overall design consists of a circular form with a central diamond-shaped cutout.
At the centre of both the obverse and reverse, within the diamond-shaped cutout, is a depiction of a bus. This central motif is encircled by a ring decorated with alternating linear patterns. On the obverse, the ring bears the inscriptions “BEAUMONT” and “CITY LINES, INC.”, identifying the city of issue and the transit company operating the bus routes. The reverse ring is inscribed with the denomination “GOOD FOR ONE FARE.”
Beaumont is a port city situated along the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 90 miles east of Houston, the capital of Texas, and about 30 miles west of the Texas–Louisiana state line. Founded in AD 1838, Beaumont’s early economy was primarily based on rice cultivation. However, with the discovery and development of oil fields in the 20th century, petroleum extraction emerged as the city’s principal industry, a status it continues to hold today.
