This is a one-dollar silver commemorative coin issued in AD 1939 by the Dominion of Canada, a self-governing dominion within the British Empire, to commemorate the royal visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of King George VI, with the initials “HP” appearing at the lower right of the neck to signify the engraver, Humphrey Paget. Encircling the portrait is the Latin legend “GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP,” meaning “George VI, by the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India.”
The reverse depicts the silhouette of the Centre Block of Parliament Hill, the Gothic Revival building that serves as the political centre of Canada in its capital, Ottawa. On May 20, AD 1939, the King and Queen visited the Centre Block to meet with members of the Canadian Parliament and subsequently presided over a Trooping of the Colour ceremony on the adjacent grounds in celebration of Victoria Day. The upper periphery bears the Latin inscription “FIDE SVORVM REGNAT,” translating to “He reigns by the faith of his people.” The lower portion is inscribed with the issuing country’s name “CANADA,” the date “1939,” and the denomination “1 DOLLAR.”
From May 17 to June 15, AD 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth undertook a landmark royal tour of Canada, marking the first visit by a reigning British monarch to the dominion. During the tour, the royal couple travelled across all Canadian provinces and made an official visit to the United States, where they met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the postwar years, Queen Elizabeth — by then known as the Queen Mother — would return to Canada on numerous occasions for both official engagements and private visits.
