This is a one-cent coin issued in AD 1968 for circulation in the United States, commonly known as the “Lincoln Cent.” It holds the distinction of being both the smallest denomination in the U.S. currency system and the longest-running coin series in American history. The coin is struck in brass.
The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, who led the Union during the American Civil War and was a central figure in the abolition of slavery. In AD 1909, to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln’s birth, the U.S. government chose to replace the previous Indian Head design on the one-cent coin with Lincoln’s likeness. To the left of the portrait are the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”, while the right side bears the year of issue, “1968”, along with the mintmark “D”, indicating production at the Denver Mint.
From AD 1909 to AD 1958, the reverse of the coin featured a design of wheat ears, known as the “Wheat Cent.” Beginning in AD 1959, the design was changed to depict the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Above the memorial appears the United States national motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Out of many, one). Along the upper periphery is the country name, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while the denomination, “ONE CENT,” is inscribed along the lower edge.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the practical utility of the one-cent coin has steadily diminished in the face of rising prices. By AD 2008, the cost to produce a single cent had risen to 1.7 cents, and by AD 2024, that figure had escalated to 3.69 cents. In response to these increasing costs, in AD 2025, then-President Donald Trump directed the U.S. Department of the Treasury to cease production of the one-cent coin, ending nearly a century of continuous minting for the Lincoln cent.
