This is an 1-cent copper coin minted between the 19th and 23rd years of the Republic of China (AD 1930–1934), during the tenure of Yang Hucheng as Director of the Xi’an Pacification Headquarters. The coin was produced at a mint established in Hanzhong by Yang’s subordinates, Sun Weiru and Zhao Shoushan. Issued in denominations of 1 cent and 2 cents, the coins were struck in a production ratio of approximately 10:1, with the 2-cent pieces being less common. Notably, this series represents the first mechanically struck copper coinage in modern Shaanxi Province.
The obverse of the coin features a denticled border and a beaded inner circle. At the centre are two crossed flags: the national flag of the Republic of China and the flag of the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party), with a double solid circle at their intersection. Flanking the beaded circle on both sides are five-petalled floral motifs serving as dividers. Along the upper rim, the national title “中華民國” (Republic of China) is inscribed in Chinese characters. The lower rim bears the abbreviation “IMTYPIF,” which is derived from the official romanisation system announced by the government in the 17th year of the Republic (AD 1928), representing the phrase “一枚銅元平一分” (I Mei Tong Yuan Pin l Fen), with each letter corresponding to the initial of each syllable in the phrase.
The reverse side of the coin also features a beaded circle, within which a double solid circle marks the central focal point. Above this centre, the denomination “一分” (1 cent) is inscribed in Chinese characters, while below it is a pair of tied wheat ears. Outside the beaded circle, a single raised dot appears on both the left and right sides. Along the upper rim is the inscription “陝西省造” (Minted in Shaanxi Province), and the lower rim bears the denomination-to-silver exchange rate: “百枚換銀幣一圓” (Hundred coins exchangeable for one silver dollar).
